Northern Exposure

Day One: We arrive in Deer Lake where we make are way to the charming fishing village of Norris Point for a two night stay in the breathtaking scenic Gros Morne National Park.

Day Two: Today we will explore the magnificent wonders of Gros Morne National Park beginning with a boat tour on beautiful Bonne Bay. On the boat tour, we will explore the geological marvel of the Table Lands, the flora and fauna, and other geological wonders of the area. The afternoon will be spent taking an actual hike on the Table Lands, the earth’s mantle dating back 500 million years followed by a visit to the Discovery Centre upon returning to Norris Point. In the evening a possible optional sunset boat tour on Bonne Bay with local entertainment.

Day Three: We depart Norris point heading up the Northern Peninsula for Hay Cove. On route we will make a stop in Port Au Choix for our lunch break followed by a visit to the Port Au Choix National Historic site. Our next visit will be at GNP (Great Northern Peninsula), where we will learn about the seal fishery and it’s economic and social impact on the development of Newfoundland Labrador. From there we will visit the Thrombolites in Flowers Cove, a form of ancient microbial communities dating back 650 million to 3.5 billion years. We arrive in Hay cove late afternoon for our two night stay.

Day Four: Our day begins with a visit to the Grenfell Experience in St. Anthony. We will learn about Wilfred Grenfell’s incredible accomplishments in Labrador and on the Northern Peninsula. This afternoon we visit L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 1000 years. This site was occupied by the Norse during their discovery of the new world. We then return to Hay Cove for dinner and entertainment.

Day Five: We depart Hay Cove for Labrador: “The Big Land”. Crossing over on the ferry our first stop will be L’Anse Amour, Canada’s second tallest lighthouse. We then continue on to Red Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Basque whalers of France and Spain hunted the right and bowhead whales during the 16th century. Overnight in Red Bay.

Day Six: Departing Red Bay we cross over on the ferry to Battle Harbour, a mercantile saltfish premises established in 1770s. Battle Harbour developed into a thriving community and became known as the: “Capital of Labrador.” Here we commence our two night stay.

Day Seven: Today we explore the sites of Battle Harbour. We visit the Battle Harbour National Historic District and Heritage Properties. In the afternoon, we can hike some of the most scenic trails found in Labrador. Returning late afternoon with leisure time before our evening’s dinner.

Day Eight: We depart Battle Harbour for our two night stay in Cow Head.

Day Nine: We will begin our day by taking a cruise to view the magnificent fjord of Western Brook Pond with its breathtaking scenery. Afternoon at leisure. Tonight we will enjoy our farewell dinner, followed by award winning local theatre.

Day Ten: Today we depart with everlasting fond memories of Newfoundland and Labrador.
