The Great Northern Peninsula Party

Day One: We arrive in Deer Lake where we make are way to the charming fishing village of Norris Point for a two night stay in the breathtaking scenic Gros Morne National Park.

Day Two: Today we will explore the magnificent wonders of Gros Morne National Park. In the morning we will drive up the coast making our first stop at Green Point. Here we will hike the old mail road that will take us along cobble beaches, small ponds and breathtaking scenery. We will then venture down to view 500 million year old rock formations that were formed at the bottom of an ancient ocean. Here you can see two divisions in time, the defining boundary between the Cambrian and Ordovician periods. In the afternoon we will take the Bonne bay water shuttle over to the south side of the Park. Here we will visit the Discovery Centre and learn about the geological marvel “Table Lands” the earths mantle dating back 500 million years ago. Following, we will hike on the actual mantle itself before returning to Norris Point. In the evening a possible optional boat tour on Bonne Bay with local entertainment.

Day Three: We depart Norris Point heading up the Northern Peninsula for Hay Cove. En route we will make a stop in Port Au Choix for our lunch break followed by a visit to the Port Au Choix National Historic Site. Our next visit will be at GNP (Great Northern Peninsula), where we will learn about the seal fishery and it’s economic and social impact on the development of Newfoundland and Labrador. We arrive in Hay Cove late afternoon for our two night stay.

Day Four: Our day begins with a visit to the Grenfell Experience in St. Anthony. We will learn about Wilfred Grenfell’s incredible accomplishments in Labrador and on the Northern Peninsula. This afternoon we visit L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 1000 years. This site was occupied by the Norse during their discovery of the New World. We then return to Hay Cove for dinner and entertainment.

Day Five: We depart Hay Cove for our two night stay in Cow Head. En route we will visit the Thrombolites in Flowers Cove, a form of ancient microbial communities dating back 650 million to 3.5 billion years. From there we continue down the coast and visit the Arches Provincial Park. Here we see three spectacular arches, the largest having a 55 foot span that has been eroded by a constant battle between land and sea for thousands of years. We will then arrive in Cow Head late afternoon.

Day Six: We begin our day by taking a cruise to view the magnificent fjord of Western Brook Pond with its breathtaking scenery. Afternoon at leisure. Tonight we will have dinner at the hotel, followed by award winning local theatre.

Day Seven: Today we leave the Northern Peninsula for Central Newfoundland making some scenic stops along before getting to Kings Point in the afternoon. There we will visit the award winning Kings Point Pottery shop to view some of the local artisan handicrafts. We will also visit the Kings Point Whale Pavilion where you will see the skeletal remains of a 55 foot humpback whale. We will arrive in Little Harbour in the late afternoon for our two night stay.

Day Eight: Today we will explore Twillingate Island and it’s surrounding area. We will visit Long Point Lighthouse, the Auk Winery, Twillingate Museum and other attractions, finishing up at the Split Rock Brewery to sample some of the local ales. This evening will be our farewell dinner featuring delicious food and breathtaking views at the charming Sansome’s Seafood Restaurant.

Day Nine: We transfer to the airport for our flight home with fond memories of our incredible experiences in Canada’s best-kept secret “Newfoundland and Labrador”.
